If at
all possible try to have your script read by friends or peers before paying
for professional script consultation.
No,
I’m not trying to
talk myself out of a job! But I believe writers should spend their money
wisely and well.
We all have enormous resources at our disposal if only we will ask.
You’d
be surprised at the script issues that can be discovered FIRST just by
simply having another pair of eyes, regardless of skill level, look over
your screenplay.
If
you
are involved in a writer's group (such as the Scriptwriters
Network) there
are programs already set up to have members help each other evaluate their
screenplays. Once you have that initial
feedback,
take a short amount of time to digest the comments. Think about the ones
that make sense, then come back to your screenplay and re-read it. Do any
of the
notes ring true? If so, then do another rewrite addressing the problem areas
in your
script.
Regardless of your level of screenwriting experience, it's common to
make easily correctable mistakes and/or gaps of logic in a first draft script. Always,
always spell check and read your script for grammatical errors. When investing
in
professional script consultation you do not want to have the consultant’s
time spent on easily correctable errors.
